Psychotherapy training
The talking treatments or psychotherapies are an integral part of the daily practice of all people working in mental health, and psychiatrists are expected to be expert in the practice of at least one model, and have experience with the evidence based models (cognitive therapy and interpersonal therapy). The new
Psychodynamic Psychotherapy. Kate Wood runs psychotherapy teaching in Room 120 at 11:30 AM, weekly, beginning when teaching starts and continuing until teaching ends.
Kate organizes appropriate cases and supervisors for psychodynamic psychotherapy. If you see a patient who would benefit from psychotherapy with a trainee, then discuss this with Kate.
Most long cases submitted to the college are based on a psychodynamic approach, but other approaches can also be considered if appropriate supervision is organised: this also should be discussed with Kate.
Evidence based therapies. It is expected and hoped that all trainees will be involved in evidence based therapy, including cognitive therapy and interpersonal therapy throughout their training. One should discuss this with one's usual supervisor, and if he or she is not prepared or able to supervise the case, Kate Wood has a list of consultants and psychologists who will supervise one. Trainees should use their clinical placements wisely -- for example it may be appropriate to get training on behavioural techniques and family therapy when working with children. When the academic module on cognitive therapy is given (which is mid 2011 and again in 2013) trainees will obtain maximum benefit if they are providing cognitive therapy to patients at that time.
Logbooks The trainee is responsible for keeping a log book of the patients they have seen and the supervision they have obtained for treatment of that patient, when providing psychotherapy.
Training group. After discussion with the trainees we have organized a three month trial of a Balint group. This will meet in room 117 every week until 4 June from 3.30 - 4.50pm. Ourtintention is to have such a group running each year.
